Individual/Self and Group Advocacy is based on the individual needs, issues or concerns that a person or a group of people who has/have a disability may be experiencing. Issues such as discrimination, housing, employment, access to buildings or services and transport, or social isolation are just a few examples.
Individual/Self advocacy is about helping people to be part of their community, to be treated with respect and dignity and receive the same rights as everyone else. DAN provides support, information and training for groups of service users to enable them to advocate, lobby and negotiate with organisations, services or agencies to have their issues heard.
Community Education tools include workshops, presentations, information leaflets, publication of a newsletter, and participation at relevant peak bodies/committees. Just one example in educating the community is the programme called 'Imagine life from my side' (Small - Druett 1998 model) to educate students so that they are better able to meet the needs of, act, interact and react appropriately to, with knowledge and confidence, people with disabilities the same as everyone else in the community.
Service user Training tools include the presentation of topical workshops that aim to teach service users how to advocate or speak up for themselves in an assertive manner, so that the best outcomes can be achieved. service users receive individual training as part of their case management plan and also via presentations to support groups and services.
Support, referral & information is provided by DAN to service users, the community, support and interested groups, as well as other disability, health and welfare services.
'Celebration of Ability' is held annually in conjunction with the International Day of People with a Disability. A Dance Party is organised by a steering committee comprised of members from various disability service providers, community members and DAN's staff to celebrate the abilities and achievements of people with a disability. This year's Dance Party will be held on Friday the 2nd of December, from 6pm to 10pm at the Hammond Hall, Wagga Wagga Show Ground, Bourke Street.
In previous years this event has been funded and supported by the community, local businesses, disability services, Wagga Wagga City Council and FaHCIA. For more information about this year's 'Celebration of Ability,' or if you would like to help the steering committee plan the activities, please contact our office 69 219 225 or dan_inc@bigpond.com
