About us

Introduction

The Disability Advocacy Network Inc (DAN), is situated at 31 Fitzmaurice Street, Wagga Wagga and was established in 1992 to provide a range of free advocacy services to people with disabilities, their families and carers.

DAN is funded by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCIA)  www.facs.gov.au to provide services to  the target population - people with disabilities, their families and carers - in the Riverina & Murray, South West Slopes, Southern Tablelands and Central Murrumbidgee (major towns include: Wagga Wagga, Cootamundra, Tumut, Temora, Young, West Wyalong, Griffith, Leeton and Naranderra).

 

DAN is auspiced under the Community Management Committee model comprising representatives from consumer groups, people with disabilities, their families and carers. 

 

The staff comprise an Intake/Information/Administrative Officer, several Advocacy Officers and a Coordinator, and perform their roles professionally and have undertaken extensive training to ensure that the most effective outcomes for consumers are obtained.  DAN's staff adhere  to the Principles and Practices of all  legislation applicable to the provision of advocacy services for people with disabilities, such as

Our vision

DAN has a vision  to promote and give priority to the protection of the rights, responsibilities, interests and dignity of people with disabilities of all ages in the Riverina & Murray, South West Slopes, Southern Tablelands and Central Murrumbidgee regions, through the provision of a quality service of self advocacy, advocacy information and support.

We recognise the individual needs and choices of all people with disabilities, and also the needs of their families and carers.  The service shall have values based on the individual needs, lifestyle quality and choices available to people with disabilities.

We will promote this service to all potential consumers, and raise understanding, education and awareness of the needs of people with disabilities within the wider community.
 

Our aim

Our  aim  is to assist consumers to develop and maintain the personal skills and confidence to enable them to represent their own interests, have their interests represented, understand their rights and responsibilities, and to further their integration in the community, through Individual/Self and Group Advocacy, Systemic Advocacy, Community Education, Consumer Training, Support, Counselling, Referral and the provision of Information.
